Hi everyone,

Uncle Charlie's courting life was the most exciting in my Shaw family.

As you know, he and Uncle Jack were paired as best friends. When they went courting on Sunday afternoon, Granddaddy told them to return home, before night. Uncle Jack wanted to follow Granddaddy's rules, but Uncle Charlie kept courting, until night fell, and they both got whipping. Also, Uncle Charlie and Uncle Jack liked to fish. Sometimes, when they said they were going fishing, Uncle Jack fished, while Uncle Charlie went courting. They returned home together and showed Granddaddy the fish they had caught. Uncles Jack and Charlie believed Granddaddy knew the fish were too few to have been caught by both. Yet, Granddaddy did not ever say anything and let them get away with doing that. Granddaddy was too smart about raising his children to speak about something he did not absolutely know, with one earlier exception. What a family lesson!

I invite all parents to follow Granddaddy and Grand Mama’s lesson of knowing the ins and outs of your children, to be sure you do not accuse them falsely but, when they deserve it, whip or punish them and explain what they should have done and what they should do in similar future situations. Because there is no perfect child, and we want more perfect families, disciplining children should be a learning process that encourages them to love their parents for keeping them from making major mistakes.
