Hi everyone,
After Daddy and Annie Bell courted eight months, one night, they were especially happy.
When Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah didn’t appear to be listening, Daddy proposed marriage to Annie Bell. He said, “Annie Bell, I love you. I want to marry you. Will you marry me?” She glowed, smiled widely, and answered softly, “Yes.” Then, Daddy asked her to marry him the fourth Sunday in August in 1928. Mama said, with glee, “Yes, Adam, I will marry you then.”
The next week, Mama told Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah, “Adam asked me to marry him. I am grown. So, we are going to get married the fourth Sunday in August. I want you both to see me get married.” Mama seemed so certain about marriage, until Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah accepted her invitation to the ceremony. But they burned in their hearts because marriage would mean loss of a daughter and a servant. Mama served them like a hired hand the eight years she lived with them, without a sassy word. However, Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah knew the Shaw family and were proud the best man around had chosen her to be his wife.
Mama continued working for Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah and preparing for wedding, until her wedding day.
